Tyler Chapel Hill Wins The 2011 Class 3A Division I Championship

Tyler Chapel Hill (15-0) won the Class 3A Division I Championship with a 20-19 victory over Alvarado (14-1).  This was Tyler Chapel Hill's 2nd state championship having won the 4A Championship in 1989.   They lost last year to Henderson.  Alvarado was playing in their first ever championship game.

The Bulldogs from Tyler Chapel Hill started off quickly jumping out to an early 13-0 lead and it looked like it might be a blowout.  The Indians from Alvarado responded with a couple of trick plays to even the score by halftime as the teams went to the break tied at 13.

It was a defensive battle in the 3rd quarter until the Bulldogs scored on a 55 yard pass to make it 20-13. Midway through the  4th quarter the Indians running back Wayne Onderdonck scored his 2nd touchdown of the game to bring the Indians within a point with 10:38 left in the game.  Alvarado head coach Jeff Dixon decided to go for two but the play did not work leaving the score 20-19 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Indians had one last chance with just over 2 minutes left in the game from their own 20.  After a long pass they were in Bulldog territory.  The drive was stopped though as Tyler Chapel Hill recovered a fumble at their own 16 with 1:38 remaining.  They were then able to run out the clock for the championship.

Onderdonck finished the season with 2,995 yards on 343 carries and 30 touchdowns. Chapel Hill quarterback Avery Saenz was named the offensive most valuable player after throwing for 118 yards and two touchdowns.  The game was played in front of 22,748 fans at Cowboys Stadium.
