Coach Essary Becomes All-Time Win Leader at Athens

The Athens Hornets are on one of the best winning streaks in school history. Over the past 2 seasons, they have an 18-5 record. Those 18 wins are the best 2 season total since they won 19 back in 1958-1959. If they win 8 games again next season, they will tie for the schools all-time best 3 year win total of 26 wins.

Coach Paul Essary looks to have things going smoothly now at Athens. He started off with up and down swings with 4 wins in 2009, 11 in 2010 and then back to 5 in 2011. This years team made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs before falling to one of Class 4A's best teams in Kennedale. Their other losses came to 2 Class 5A teams in pre-district and then to a 10-1 Van team in district play. Coach Essary now has a record of 42-27 during his 6 years with the Hornets. That makes him the all-time leader there in coaching wins passing up J.T. (Bobo) Nelson 1932-1941 (40 wins), Mike Schuelke 1991-1998 (38) and Herman Bailey 1953-1958 (36). He has an all-time coaching record of 69-71-0 having been the head coach at Center 1999-2002 (15-26) and Elkhart 1996-1998 (12-18).

Next years team looks to have some very good talent coming back led by Travon Fulller who is a Texas A&M verbal commitment. They should have no problems with running game behind a big offensive line.
