Monday Morning QB

Week #6 saw our Top 10 list only take one hit. That’s not one hit in each classification, that’s 1 loss total. The one loss was one of the best games of the year. The Coppell Cowboys upset the #4 5A Southlake Carroll Dragons in 2 OT’s, 57-53. This was the first district loss for the Dragons since 2001 and their district win streak was finally halted at 38 games. To add to this, Carroll had never lost a district game since moving up to class 5A.

#1 3A Navasota won another 1 point game last week. The Rattlers started the season with a 35-34 victory over 4A Henderson and in week #6 they survived a 28-27 scare by the Hornets of Caldwell. Navasota had to rally for 14 points in the fourth quarter after trailing 21-14 at halftime. Caldwell responded and scored with 22 seconds left to make the score 28-27. They then earned a Lone Star Gridiron salute by going for two and the win. The Rattlers stuffed the sweep though and held on to the win. Next weeks game should be another tough one when they take on the 5-1 Tigers from Rockdale.

#21 3A Brownwood lost another close one last week when they fell to #13 3A Abilene Wylie 31-28. Both of these teams have arguably the toughest schedules in all of Texas. The Lions from Brownwood continue to struggle since moving down to 3A this year. Their losses are to the best 3A has to offer and one of the best in 4A. After opening up with a victory at the Alamo Dome in the Kickoff Classic, they lost by 17 to #8 3A Waco LaVega in week 1. In weeks 2 & 3, they fell by 3 points to #19 4A Stephenville and then by 7 points to #3 3A Liberty Hill. They Bulldogs from Wylie are having better results with their tough schedule. Their two losses were a 5 point loss to #12 4A Wolfforth Frenship and a 3 point loss to that same Liberty Hill team. Wylie did pull off a 2 point win over the LaVega team that Brownwood lost to. I would still not count out the Lions but 3A is loaded with great teams and it will take an all out effort to beat them.

We talked about the new kids on the block during our show a few weeks back so I had to mention what happened in 24-4A. There were TWO first year programs win very big games in week 6. After the re-alignements came out, everyone had to feel sorry for Manvel and Pearland Dawson for having to begin their varsity programs off in this very tough district that includes teams like La Marque, Texas City, Angleton and Friendswood. Let start off with Manvel. They had a miracle finish and upset #16 Texas City, 25-21. Manvel scored with 35 seconds left to cut its deficit to 21-19. They were able to get the ball back and scored with 13 seconds left to get the win. Across town, Pearland Dawson upset Angleton, 21-20, in overtime.

#5 3A Cuero found another great talent in Freshman RB Trent Jackson. Jackson is the first Cuero running back to play on the varsity as a freshman since Robert Strait and Melvin Barnett. In his first start, he rushed for 222 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Gobblers to a 49-14 win over Yoakum.
