When Chad Morris took the head football coach job at Austin Lake Travis High last February, he knew that he just walked into a great situation. There are not many jobs that would lead a coach to leave a tradition rich team like Stephenville but this was one of them.
The Cavaliers were coming off the schools first state football championship. They had a good group of players returning for another year, including a quarterback (Garrett Gilbert) who is one of the best all-time in Texas High School football history.
Last year the Cavaliers were 15-1. A victory over Longview in this Saturdays championship game in Waco would make this years team 16-0 and increase its winning streak to a state-best 30 games.
Lake Travis is averaging 55 points per game through their five playoff games even through they have rested their starters in the fourth quarter almost every week. The Cavaliers are outscoring their opponents by an average of 55-20 a game.
Lake Travis averages 498 yards a game, 128 more than Longview. The Cavs also surpass Longview in average points per game (49-39), and passing yards (309-87).
This marks Morris' fifth appearance in the state championship game. At Bay City, his 2000 team won the 4A title. In 16 years as a high school head coach, his record stands at 151-25.
All eyes will be on Floyd Casey Stadium this Saturday. This was the site of last years 36-34 Lake Travis championship victory over Highland Park.
