The last game this Saturday at Texas Stadium between Denton Guyer and Longview in the 4A state semifinal could be the final high school football game played there. The Dallas Cowboys have the stadium booked next Saturday, although a high school game could be played the night before.
The 5A Chmpionship games next week will be played at Reliant Stadium in Houston and the 4A Division II title game is already set for the Georgetown school district’s new stadium. That leaves the 4A Division II championship and the championships in 3A, 2A and 1A.
After Saturday night, Texas Stadium will have hosted 27 playoff games in a five-week span this year. The first high school game at Texas Stadium was played on Dec. 17, 1971 when San Antonio Lee edged Wichita Falls, 28-27, in the Class 4A state title game.
There have been 554 playoff games at Texas Stadium and around 700 high school games including regular-season contests played there.
The good news is the Cowboys say they intend to host high school games at the new stadium in Arlington.
The UIL seems interested in playing its 5A state title games next year at the new stadium. The 5A games are at Houston's Reliant Stadium this year, but next year's site has not been determined.
