Houston Texans SQT — Saturday
-
Updated: May 20, 2009
Houston Chavez will be the host of the Houston Texans 7-on-7 SQT this Saturday May 23rd. This event will be held at the Methodist Training Center and as always it will be a well run event. Also, just like in the past, this SQT will not be lacking in quality teams. Here are the pools, players to watch and of course my predictions.
Pool A : A&M Consolidated Houston Bellaire Cypress Woods Fort Bend Dulles
A&M Consolidated is a team that usually qualifies for the state tournament and this year should be no exceptions. They make the trip to Houston with some great players like TE Kyle Doll, DB Andrew Fletcher amd DB Jake Fairhurst. Houston Bellaire will bring QB Adrian Nelson (1128 yrds passing in 2008) and WR/DB Derwyn Lauderdale. Cypress Woods was 1-2 last week at Cy Falls but showed that they have talent. Their key players will be RB Jeremy Conley, WR Jonathan Cross (29-556 in 2008) and DB Bryce Callahan. Fort Bend Dulles will show off a few good DB's in C.J. Love and Zach McMillian.
Mike's Pick: A&M Consolidated
Pool B : Manvel Houston Stratford Spring Westfield Houston Westside
Manvel went 3-1 in the tournament that they hosted last week losing in their semis. They averaged almost 50 points per game in pool play. They will be led by WR SaQwan Edwards, DB Forrest Jones and QB Dexter Forman. Houston Stratford showed that they also have great talent going 2-1 last week at Cy Falls only losing by 2 points to Cypress Creek. LB Campbell Colyer will be someone to watch. Spring Westfield will be intereting to watch. They will bring a lot of talent led by QB Jacoby Walker, WR Jordan Sampson and LB Kenneth Dickie. Houston Westside rounds out this solid pool bringing RB Frank Williams, WR Jordan Sampson, LB Kevin Rodriguez and LB Chad Thompson.
Mike's Pick: Houston Stratford
Pool C : Houston Lamar Channelview Houston Sam Houston Texas City
Houston Lamar has already qualified for state. They were very impressive in winning the Manvel SQT last week. Channelview went 0-3 last week at Manvel but they only lost by 25 points in all 3 games. Their key players will be RB Denzel Granderson, WR Chris Hawkins and DB Dominique Jefferson. Texas City will be led by RB Justin Branch. They were 0-3 last week at Manvel. Houston Sam Houston will try to keep things close.
Mike's Pick: Channelview
Pool D : Houston Chavez Baytown Memorial Houston Milby Houston Waltrip
Houston Chavez is the host and they will be led by DB Roland Veal (4.6 speed), RB Mark Cole, QB Andre Kelly and TE Traymond Brown. They were 2-1 last week at Manvel. They lost by only 5 points to Fort Bend Elkins. Houston Milby will be led by LB Edder Moreno and Houston Waltrip will highlight WR Torian Chapman. Baytown Memorial might put up a good fight.
Mike's Pick: Houston Chavez
* Team has qualified for state and can not advance past pool play

Mike's Pick: Houston Stratford and Houston Chavez
