7 on 7 State Championship Division I Pool Breakdown (Pools E – H)

Here are the Division I State Championship pool breakdowns with stats, key players and of course my predictions. (POOLs E - H)

Pool E: San Antonio Alamo Heights, Arlington Bowie, Pearland, Tyler Lee

San Antonio Alamo Heights is the only 4A team in this pool as they will be making their 5th consecutive appearance. They will feature two very good receivers in WR John Cabell and WR Trevor Lovelady. They finished SQT play with a 2-3 record against tournament teams. Arlington Bowie will be a team to watch making their 4th consecutive appearance. They made the 2007 Semifinals and will be led by WR Montra Nelson. Pearland is making their 4th overall appearance and will be very competitive with players like DB Jeff Phillips and ATH Claudius Smithers. Tyler Lee only missed the inaguaral tournament in 1998 and are now making their 11th consecutive appearance at the state tournament. They have a lot of great athletes in LB Blake Roberts (Committed to TCU), RB Da Da Brown, DB Chris Dinkins (Committed to TCU) and LB Austin Wilson. They made the 2002 Quarterfinals and the Quarterfinals last year and were the 2004 State 7 on 7 Champions but they might struggle this year going 0-3 vs. tournament teams in SQT play. This will be a vey competitive pool as all the teams match up pretty well against each other....flip a coin.

Mike's Picks: 1. Arlington Bowie 2. Tyler Lee 3. San Antonio Alamo Heights 4. Pearland

Pool F: Plano East, Austin Anderson, Cy Fair, Whitehouse

Plano East will be making their 5th overall appearance and will be led by QB Brandon Wesley, WR Brandon Lewis, DB Dayvyon Henry (Committed to Kansas) and WR Denzelle White. Austin Anderson who is making their 1st appearance at the state tournament will be depending on JR QB Sam Wehmeyer, TE Stanley Kurunwune and LB Nate Shaw. Cy Fair will be making their 10th consecutive appearance and will feature DB Tevin Champagne (Committed to Rice), QB Blake Reese, TE Patrick Kilday and DB Duran Snoddy. Whitehouse is the only 4A school in this pool and will be making their 2nd overall appearance. They will feature 1000 yard receiver WR Trey Metoyer and DB Quincy Aldridge. This one will be a close call between Plano East and Cy Fair.

Mike's Picks: 1. Plano East 2. Cy Fair 3. Whitehouse 4. Austin Anderson

Pool G: Arlington, Bastrop, Houston Chavez, Conroe Oak Ridge

Three teams (Arlington, Bastrop and Houston Chavez) are all making their 2nd overall appearance and the other is only making their 3rd. Arlington is very talented and will feature QB Matt Joeckel (3017 yrds passing in 2008 Committed to Texas A&M), WR Brandon Lewis, LB Keighen Thetford, JR WR Miles Onyegbule and DB Jordan Davis. Bastrop will be led by WR Auston Shipley (707 yards receiving in 2008). Houston Chavez went 2-3 vs. tournament teams in SQT play. They will feature QB Andre Kelly (2062 yards passing in 2008), RB Mark Cole, WR Jafus Gaines (882 yards receiving in 2008), DB Roland Veal and TE Traymond Brown. Conroe Oak Ridge will be relying on QB Ryan Cyr, RB Freddie Dotson and DB Trent Langley. Arlington will be too tough to handle.

Mike's Picks: 1. Arlington 2. Houston Chavez 3. Conroe Oak Ridge 4. Bastrop

Pool H: Arlington Lamar, Cedar Park, Pearland Dawson, Houston Stratford

Arlington Lamar is making their 12th consecutive appearance having qualified every year!!! They have made the semifinals four times (1998, 2003, 2007 and 2008) and this year could be the year they are state 7 on 7 champions. They will feature RB Ja'Terian Douglas (2036 yards rushing in 2008 1st Team All-State). They went 2-2 against tournament competition in SQT play but the 2 losses was by a total of 3 points. Cedar Park is making their 3rd overall appearance. They made the Quarterfinals in 2004. They will feature RB Darren Thornhill, LB Garrett Quick and LB Joey Nichol. Park went 4-3 against tournament teams in SQT play. Second year varsity program Pearland Dawson will be making their 1st appearance. They are very talented and could surprise. They are led by QB Darian Lazard, RB Xavier Brown (Committed to Houston), DB David Farri and DB Caleb Williams. Dawson finished SQT play with a 2-3 record vs. tournament teams. Houston Stratford is making their 7th overall and 6th consecutive appearance. They went 4-1 against tournament teams and were the 2007 Runner Ups. LB Campbell Colyer will be their leading player. Arlington Lamar will finally get over the hump.

Mike's Picks: 1. Arlington Lamar 2. Pearland Dawson 3. Cedar Park 4. Houston Stratford
