7 on 7 State Championship Division I Pool Breakdown (Pools I – L)

Here are the Division I State Championship pool breakdowns with stats, key players and of course my predictions. (POOLs I - L)

Pool I: Copperas Cove, Jersey Village, Richardson Pearce, Southlake Carroll

This pool features 2 newcomers (Jersey Village and Richardson Pearce) and 2 old-timers (Copperas Cove and Southlake Carroll). Copperas cove is making their 9th overall appearance. They made it to the Semifinals in 2002. Cove will bring lots of talent like RB Brandin Byrd, DB Fernando Smith, RB Will Wright, WR Brelon Chancellor (715 yards rushing in 2008) and QB Cody Vaughn. They went 2-3 against tournament teams in SQT play. Jersey Village will feature TE Ronell Lavigne and LB Steven Williams while fellow first timer Richardson Pearce will being a very dangerous set of passer and receivers. QB Caleb Lewis (3528 yards passing in 2008), WR Blake Jumonville 1367 yards receiving in 2008), WR Josh Gold (1142 yards receiving in 2008) and WR Jake Allen (753 yards receiving in 2008) lead them. Always dangerous Southlake Carroll is making their 10th overall appearance. They were the inaugural champion in 1998. Once again they will be talented and football savvy featuring QB David Piland, DB Kacy Rodgers, LB Mitchell Osborne and LB Lincoln Schick. They were 3-1 against tournament teams and their only loss was by 1 point. This will be a fun pool to watch. Usually you go with the experienced teams but in this one, Pearce has too much talent.

Mike's Picks: 1. Richardson Pearce 2. Southlake Carroll 3. Copperas Cove 4. Jersey Village

Pool J: Birdville, Edcouch-Elsa, Lewisville Hebron, Temple

Birdville is making their 1st appearance and will feature another great passer and group of receivers in QB Josh Dorman (3630 yrds passing in 2008), WR Cory Hines (1001 yards receiving in 2008), WR Jonathan Dents (838 yards receiving in 2008), WR Clarke Renfro (1087 yards receiving in 2008) and DB Isaac Unesi. They went 2-2 vs. tournament teams in SQT play. One of LSG's favorite 7 on 7 teams, Edcouch-Elsa will be making their 4th overall and 2nd consecutive appearance. They will be showing off the talents of WR Jesse Jalomo (815 yards receiving in 2008). Lewisville Hebron is making their 9th consecutive appearance at the state tournament. They made it to the Quarterfinals in 2003 and 2007 and will be led by LB Christopher Summers. They played a tough SQT season and finished 4-4 against tournament teams. Temple is replacing Abilene Wylie who will play Division II. This will be their 3rd consecutive appearance and they will bring with them one of the top recruits in the nation. RB Lache Seastrunk (1541 rushing yards in 2008) will be in the spotlight. Other key players will be LB Derrick Davis and LB Stedman Moore. Another first timer with tons of talent will be a pool winner as Birdville takes this one.

Mike's Picks: 1. Birdville 2. Lewisville Hebron 3. Temple 4. Edcouch-Elsa

Pook K: Coppell, Katy Seven Lakes, Stephenville, Tomball

Coppell will be making their 4th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance, making it to the Quarterfinals in 2007. Their key players will be QB Hayden Hawk and Missouri commitment LB Jared Parham. Coppell went 4-1 in SQT play vs. tournament teams and their only loss was by 1 point. Katy Seven Lakes is making their 3rd consecutive appearance and will bring a talented group but they will have a tough time in this pool. Stephenville is making their 6th overall and 5th consecutive appearance, making it to the Semifinals in 1998, the Quarterfinals in 2006 and the Quarterfinals last year. They have a 2-4 record vs. tournament teams in SQT play this year. Tomball is making their 2nd consecutive appearance. They will be led by WR Jordan Leslie (59-1064 receiving yards in 2008 1st Team All-State) and TE Matt Marfisi. They had a 3-2 record against
tournament teams in SQT play. This one is tough to pick...its another flip a coin.

Mike's Picks: 1. Coppell 2. Tomball 3. Stephenville 4. Katy Seven Lakes

Pool L: Colleyville Heritage, Houston Lamar, Round Rock Stony Point, The Woodlands

All 4 teams in this pool are in Class 5A. Colleyville Heritage is making their 12th consecutive appearance, having qualified every year!!! They made it to the Quarterfinals in 2002 and the Semifinals last year and in 2005. They were also crowned the 7 on 7 State Champions in 2006. Heritage will be led by WR Jake Skinner and LB Robert Goheen. Houston Lamar will be making their 5th overall appearance and will feature JR QB Bram Kohlhaussen, ATH Darren Ervin, DB Drew Bostick, DB Neiko Conway and RB Patrick Andrews. Round Rock Stony Point is making their 4th overall and 2nd consecutive appearance. They will bring lots of talent like DB Desmond Martin, WR Gerard Shillow (46-796 yards receiving in 2008), DB Kevin White and LB Reshard Asmore. The Woodlands will be making their 10th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance. They made the Quarterfinals in 2000 and 2005. Their stars will be WR Randy Knust, LB Perry Cooper, DB Ryan Clapsaddle, LB Nick Crewe and JR RB Daniel Lasco. Both Heritage and The Woodlands went 1-5 in SQT play. These teams will all play very close games.

Mike's Picks: 1. Round Rock Stony Point 2. Houston Lamar 3. Colleyville Heritage 4. The Woodlands
