The Melissa Cardinals won their first ever state championship with a win over the Hempstead Bobcats in the Class 2A Division I Championship game.  This game featured two teams that had never played in a championship game before.  Melissa began varsity play in 2004.

The first half was a defensive battle with the score tied 7-7 going into the break.  The Cardinals broke it open in the 3rd quarter with 200 yards of offense and 21 points to take a 28-7 lead.

The Bobcats defensive back Tribete Smith had 2 interceptions in the game and returned one for a touchdown was named the Defensive Player Of The Game.   Cardinal running back Kristov George ran for 132 yards and scored 2 touchdowns was named the Offensive Player Of The Game.  George also played a great game at linebacker with 10 tackles.

Hempstead playing in their first championship game had a great year winning their district for the first time in 38 years.  Melissa is now the 5th team to win the State 7-on-7 championship and 11 man state championship in the same year.  They join Celina (2000), Tyler Lee (2004), Celina (2007) and Austin Lake Travis (2010).

The game was played in front of  8,435.
