Five BIG Things in Texas High School Football
10/1/13
Its that time again... time for my Five BIG Things! These are the things that stood out for me recently as it relates to Texas high school football. As usual, they are not listed in order of importance - just as they come to me.
1. Calallen makes a statement! - Wow. I was totally shocked by this game. Sure, I expected Corpus Christi Calallen to make it a good game with Port Lavaca Calhoun and sure, I could see them winning it... but 48-0? Wow! I don't know what else to say but "Wow!"
2. Bowie looking great at 5-0 – We figured Austin Bowie would have a really good team this year and part of the surprise in their 5-0 record has to be the fact that teams like Austin Westlake are playing surprisingly below expectations. What you can't take away from the Bulldogs however is that they are playing great. Austin Eschenburg is looking like a world beater and the matchup next week against Austin Lake Travis is going to be a must-see game. I may even end up at this game on Friday.
3. Whitehouse/Carthage lives up to the hype – What a great example of East Texas football. Carthage has been the big kid on the block for the past couple of seasons and really only Lone Star Gridiron was giving Whitehouse the credit they deserved prior to the start of the year. This matchup of two great QBs (Patrick Mahomes - Whitehouse, Blake Bogenschutz - Carthage) was an offensive showcase.
The final score was 63-39 in favor of Whitehouse, but Carthage was controlling the game early one. This will certainly go down as one of my favorite games from this season.
4. Pearland Oilers quietly kicking butt - Sure, you probably know that the Pearland Oilers are 4-0, but did you realize they have outscored their opponents 203-9? Yes, the Oiler defense has given up only 9 points in 4 games. This week they have Pasadena Sam Rayburn at the Rig for homecoming and you can bet the place is going to be rocking! Pay attention to this Pearland team.
5. Slow week - don't bet on it! - Those who are calling this a humdrum week of Texas high school football obviously don't really understand it. Sure, there are quite a few marquee teams with an open week, but there are still HUNDREDS of great matchups.
Austin Bowie vs Austin Lake Travis (see above), El Campo vs Bellville, Gilmer vs Tyler Chapel Hill, Pearland Dawson vs Texas City, Lorena vs Waco Connally - these are just a half dozen off the top of my head. I DARE YOU to tell these guys that their game this week is boring.
These so called "experts" need to get a clue. When the "Friday Night Lights" are on... its exciting. <-----PERIOD!
