Is Cameron Yoe’s Playoff Run Really A Surprise?

The Yoemen from Cameron Yoe are running through some of the best Class 3A Division I teams in the playoffs. They currently have wins over #15 Glen Rose (Bi-District), #1 Teague (Area) and East Chambers (Regionals). This is a shock to a lot of people from around the state.....BUT should it be?

Cameron Yoe was ranked #18 in our end of the regular season rankings. Thats not too bad but they were ranked #2 in our pre-season polls. In our pre-season predictions, we had them defeating Teague in the Quarterfinals and losing to Hallettsville in the semifinals. They were our #23 team in our Team Of The Decade poll for 2014 and 9% of our fans voted them as most likely to repeat as champions. They stumbled out of the blocks this year with a 2-4 start to the season. They had surprising losses to Waco Connally and China Spring. They also had tough losses to great competion like #3 2A DI Refugio and this weeks playoff opponent #7 3A DI Rockdale. Head Coach Rick Rhoades found a way to turn things around and since that Rockdale loss, they have went on to win 7 straight. That gives them a current record of 9-4 which guarantees them them their 7th consecutive winning season.

The main reason for the turn around may be the Yoe rushing attack. During their 4 losses, they were held to their 4 lowest rushing totals. They had 52 yards vs. Connally, 90 vs. China Spring, 92 vs. Refugio and 119 vs. Rockdale. That is an average of 88 rushing yards per game. They are averaging 226 yards in their 3 playoff wins. That rushing game also made their passing attack more efficient (weird huh!!). During their 3 playoff win, they have 10 passing touchdowns (25 in their other 10 games) on only 58 passing attempts. That is a touchdown every 5.8 passes.

This weeks game will be against a team they know very well in Rockdale. This rivalry game is called The Battle of the Bell. It became know at that in 1954 and Cameron holds a 41-19 edge in the series since then. They also lead the series all-time 62-24-3. Yoe won 54-33 (2013) and 34-0 (2012) but Rockdale won this year 34-27. What will happen this time around?
