Manvel over Nederland 51-26

Manvel Mavericks (10-0) vs. Nederland Bulldogs (8-2)

The Manvel Mavericks took on the Nederland Bulldogs at NRG Stadium Friday night 11/24/17. Manvel got the ball to start the game at their 27 and used a fast-paced no-huddle offense to take a 7-0 lead. The score came when quarterback Kason Martin hit receiver Jalen Preston on a pass from 33 yards out. Nederland responded and came out with their own no-huddle offense. The Bulldogs moved into Manvel territory and tried a 38 yard field goal. The snap was bobbled and Manvel took over.

The Mavericks once again used a strong running game to move down the field. Martin then hit receiver Warren Laster from 16 yards out to make it 14-0. Nederland went 3 and out before Manvel returned the punt for a touchdown. The return however, was called back on a holding penalty. Despite the miscue, Manvel then took it down and scored on a 14 yard pass to receiver Kam Scott which made the score 21-0. The quarter ended with Nederland driving.

The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard with a 22 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked and returned for 2 points by the Mavericks. That brought the score to 23-6. The Mavericks recovered an onside kick and started their drive at the Bulldog 40 yard line. The Bulldog defense held and forced a punt. Nederland then punted and forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back. Manvel intercepted and returned the pick for a touchdown but they had their 2nd touchdown called back due to a penalty. The Bulldog defense stepped up again, recovering a fumble at their own 21. The teams traded punts before Nederland ran out the clock.

Manvel finished the half with 248 total yards while Nederland had 165. Nederland had 161 of their yards in the air.

The two teams started the second half trading punts. Nederland took over on their own 30 yard line and engineered a drive that featured a 44 yard hook-and-ladder play that finished with running back Devon Simmons running it in from 5 yards out. Nederland cut into the Manvel leading making it 23-13.

Next, a fired-up Bulldog defense stopped the Mavericks to force a three and out. Nederland too was forced to punt and that punt went to Preston who took the punt return 65 yards for a touchdown. The extra point made the score 30-13.

Another Nederland pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Again, it was called back by a penalty. It was defensive holding which gave the ball back to Nederland. The Bulldogs scored from the 1 yard line as time expired in the 3rd quarter. The quarter ended with Manvel leading 30-20.

Manvel scored on their next possession when Preston took a 28 yard pass for a score. Manvel led 37-20. Keeping things interesting, a 52 yard Nederland pass set up a short touchdown run. The extra point was blocked making the score 37-26.

Manvel recovered an attempted onside kick. Martin then hit receiver Terrence Norman for a 50 yard touchdown. That was called back for a penalty making it four Manvel touchdowns called back in the game. It did not matter though as running back Garrison Johnson ran it in from 4 yards out a few plays later to make the score 44-26. After a Nederland punt, running back Trent Gordon ran in for a score from 53 yards to make the final score 51-26.

Manvel finished with 249 yards rushing and 225 yards passing.
