Updated: April 25, 2018
The Marshall Mavericks are gearing up for a big season. They went 6-5 last year and won the 16-5A District title last year. That extended their winning streak to 4 years going 30-17 during that time. They started off 0-4 before going into district play but 3 of those losses were by a total of 12 points.
This year looks like it will be an even better season. They bring back 12 all-district players and bring back both District Newcomers Of The Year. Junior QB J.J. Green was the District Offensive Newcomer Of The Year and JR Linebacker Champ Mathis was the District Defensive Newcomer Of The Year.
Coach Claude Mathis will be leading the team in just his second season as head coach but he brings with him a history of excellence. He was a guest on this season's Texas High School Football Coaches Show. With one year under coach Mathis' system, 2018 has Maverick players and fans excited.
The Mavericks will also be trying to get their 600th all-time win this year. They are currently sitting at 595. There new district will be District 9-5A DII. They will be joined there with Hallsville, Jacksonville. Lindale, Longview Pine Tree, Mount Pleasant, Nacogdoches and Whitehouse.
