Muenster Cruises to Second-Consecutive Title

Last year, the Muenster Hornets won a dramatic 36-29 victory over the Shiner Comanches in the 2A-D2 state championship. This year both teams ran it back to Arlington for a rematch. Shiner entered the contest at 15-0, and Muenster was 13-2. Unlike last year, there was no drama. The Hornets dominated the Comanches and won their second-consecutive championship in a 28-0 rout.
In the semifinals, Muenster quarterback Casen Carney did not play well against Gruver. After that game, Munster Head Coach Brady Carney told his son that he had, "a 24-hour window and then needed to shake it off and move on." Carney took his father's advice to heart and put on an MVP performance.
Carney accounted for 241 of his team's 303 yards of offense. Carney completed 9 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns and led his team in rushing with 16 carries for 79 yards and a score. Tight end Garrett Hess returned from a three-game absence due to injury and had four receptions for 107 yards and three touchdowns.
On defense, the Hornets set the tone early. Muenster recovered a fumble on the opening drive at the Shiner 35-yard line and set up the opening touchdown. Defensive MVP Rhett Walterscheid wreaked havoc in the backfield. Walterscheid tallied eight total tackles including six solo tackles and a sack. As a team, Muenster had 11 tackles for loss and four sacks.
