Grapevine turned a one-score game into a rout with 21 points in the final 4:35 of the first half, pulling away for a 42-0 victory over Carrollton Newman Smith Friday night. The win was the Mustangs’ first at home since 2023 and improved their record to 2-2.
The Mustangs needed only 22 seconds and two offensive plays to take control. Daelynn Collins returned the opening kickoff 60 yards to the Newman Smith 40-yard line. Kye Smith then connected with Ermoni Sandifer on a 23-yard screen pass that Sandifer carried into the end zone. Grapevine converted the two-point attempt to take an 8-0 lead.
Newman Smith answered with its best scoring opportunity of the first quarter. Quarterback Rashaad Robertson kept the drive alive with a 15-yard run, and a pass-interference penalty helped the Trojans reach the Grapevine 13-yard line. The Mustangs stopped Newman Smith on fourth down to preserve the shutout.
Grapevine’s defense continued to keep the Trojans from turning opportunities into points. Cedric Hicks and the defensive front pressured Robertson while the Mustangs repeatedly ended Newman Smith drives on fourth down.
The game changed during the closing minutes of the second quarter.
Jake Graham scored on a nine-yard run with 4:35 remaining. Smith connected with Sandifer on another two-point conversion to extend Grapevine’s lead to 16-0.
Newman Smith moved into Grapevine territory on its next possession, but Bradford Maxwell broke through the protection and sacked Robertson on fourth down.
Grapevine needed only one play to capitalize on the stop. Graham broke through the Newman Smith defense for a 52-yard touchdown, giving the Mustangs a 22-0 lead with 1:23 remaining in the half.
The Grapevine defense then supplied the final touchdown of the surge. Levi Kays deflected Robertson’s pass at the line of scrimmage, and Maxwell returned the interception 32 yards for a touchdown. The extra point gave Grapevine a 29-0 halftime lead.
Those three touchdowns in the final 4:35 transformed a competitive game into a commanding Grapevine advantage.
The Mustangs maintained control after halftime. Newman Smith reached the Grapevine 34-yard line on its opening possession, but Andres Garcia deflected a fourth-down pass to end the drive.
Graham gained 23 yards on Grapevine’s ensuing possession before leaving the game with an injury. Colton Williams followed with runs of 15 and 10 yards to move the Mustangs inside the Newman Smith 20-yard line. Grapevine finished the drive with a field goal to extend its lead to 32-0.
Newman Smith threatened again late in the third quarter, reaching the Grapevine 18-yard line before failing to convert on fourth down. The Mustangs answered with a long scoring drive capped by Smith’s nine-yard touchdown run on a read option early in the fourth quarter.
Grapevine added its final points on a field goal with 2:18 remaining.
The Mustangs will take their 2-2 record on the road Friday, Sept. 25, when they face Argyle.
