Cavaliers honor fallen teammate with impressive win over Wolves
Less than a month ago, tragedy struck the Lake Travis Cavaliers football program. Senior offensive lineman Odin Hensley suffered a medical emergency during practice the morning of August 10, 2026. Three days later, Hensley passed away.
Since Hensley’s passing, the Cavaliers have been working to heal while trying to regain a sense of normalcy. Head Coach Hank Carter acknowledged the weight of the tragedy but also praised his team for how they have rallied around each other.
“We have heavy hearts with Odin not being around anymore, but our kids are trying to do everything they can to honor his memory,” Carter said. Carter also expressed appreciation for the support from the school and Lakeway community, saying, “I have the best job in the world in the best place in the world.”
In the wake of Hensley’s passing, the Cavaliers cancelled their season opener last week against former district foe Dripping Springs. Lake Travis instead opened its 2026 campaign Friday night at the Pfield against the Pflugerville Weiss Wolves. The game also marked a special occasion for Coach Carter with his son, Jason Carter, making his first varsity start at quarterback.
Weiss entered the contest 1-0 after defeating Round Rock 42-28 in its season opener. Led by second-year head coach Malcolm Hill, the Wolves featured a talented roster that included four-star senior wide receiver Tre Moore, senior linebacker Noah McPeak and junior quarterback Jaxson Schad.
Carrying the emotions of the previous weeks into the opener, the Cavaliers honored Hensley with an impressive 38-21 win over the Wolves. Lake Travis jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Kicker Hendrix Bryant netted a 24-yard field goal, and running back Teddy Lofgren punched the ball in from eight yards out.
For most of the game, the Lake Travis defense held the Weiss offense in check. The Cavaliers got consistent pressure on Jaxson Schad and locked down the Weiss receivers. Things finally clicked offensively for Weiss in the second quarter. Schad connected with receiver Jordan Ibn Anderson-El for a 68-yard pass, and running back Jayon Alexander scored on a six-yard run. That was as close as the Wolves would get. On the ensuing drive, Jason Carter connected with receiver Westin Smith for an eight-yard touchdown.
At the start of second half, the Wolves had a chance to seize momentum. The defense forced the Cavaliers to punt from deep in their own territory, and the Wolves took over at the Cavaliers' 34-yard line. Lake Travis's defense stiffened, however, and forced Weiss into a missed field goal. The Cavaliers then put together a methodical drive that concluded with Travis Hopping's one-yard touchdown run.
From that point on, Lake Travis took complete control of the game. Hopping scored his second touchdown of the night, and Carter connected with receiver Luca Anton for a 61-yard touchdown pass to put Lake Travis ahead 38-7.
Despite the large deficit, Weiss refused to go quietly. Jaxson Schad connected with receiver Audric Williams for a three-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter. Linebacker Caden Bailey then returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, and Tre Moore caught the two-point conversion. The Wolves even recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove the ball to the Lake Travis five-yard line. However, the Cavaliers' defense kept the Wolves out of the end zone and sealed an emotional victory.
