2026 Hays Consolidated Hawks Basketball
Hays Consolidated High School head basketball coach Steve Ayala discusses returning to his alma mater to lead the Hawks program following two seasons as an assistant at Westlake High School and eight years of small-college coaching at St. Edward's University and Talladega College. Coach Ayala details his summer team preparations, building a roster around senior leaders Curtis Gerald III and Alejandro Valdez alongside four dual-sport football players, and his push to increase program participation to 14–15 players per squad across Freshman, JV, and Varsity levels. He evaluates the realigned district competition—which includes schools like Bowie, Buda Johnson, Dripping Springs, and Austin High—outlining realistic playoff expectations and sharing his philosophy of using a demanding non-district schedule against teams like Vandegrift and Liberty Hill to prepare the Hawks for postseason success.
