Three Fumbles Lift College Station Past Consolidated

For one half, the crosstown matchup between College Station and A&M Consolidated could have gone either way. The Cougars led by four at the break. Then the Tigers lost three fumbles on three straight possessions, and College Station turned each one into a touchdown on its way to a 45-27 win Friday night.
The Cougars had built a 17-0 lead with a field goal by Jacob Lopez, a Noah Symank quarterback sneak and a gamble that paid off. After Symank’s touchdown, College Station recovered an onside kick. The Cougars later faced fourth-and-5 outside the red zone, went for it and found Kashton Adams for a touchdown. Adams flipped in the end zone after the score and drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
A&M Consolidated refused to let the game get away. Quarterback Holt Goodwin hit running back Chunky Mooring on a 35-yard screen pass for the Tigers’ first touchdown. The Tigers then recovered a College Station fumble, and Goodwin and Mooring connected again for a 26-yard gain. Mooring scored to make it 17-13 after the extra point was blocked.
Symank answered with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Adams. As Consolidated drove again, the College Station crowd chanted “Overrated.” Goodwin supplied an answer of his own, finding Mari Moore for a 24-yard touchdown before halftime. What had looked like a runaway was a 24-20 game.
The Tigers had a chance to keep that momentum when they got the ball in the third quarter. Instead, College Station defensive back Tre Hill recovered a fumble, and Trey Walton scored on a 22-yard run on the next play.
On Consolidated’s following possession, Goodwin lost the ball while being sacked. Linebacker Wade Couch recovered it for the Cougars. Again, College Station needed only one play to score: Symank threw to Walton for a 21-yard touchdown.
A third straight Tigers possession ended in a fumble. Walton scored his third touchdown of the night, and the Cougars’ four-point halftime lead had grown to 45-20. Consolidated scored once more in the fourth quarter, but the game had turned on those three lost possessions.
Symank accounted for four touchdowns, including one on the ground. College Station improved to 4-1 and travels to Georgetown next Friday. A&M Consolidated, now 3-2, hosts Killeen iShoemaker.
