Allen Just Finished the Hardest Three-Game Stretch in Texas, and It Wasn't Close
Duncanville. DeSoto. Southlake Carroll. Three programs with sixteen state championships between them, three straight weeks, and Allen went 3-0 with a combined score of 132-48.
That is the schedule people said would expose a team starting sophomores. It did the opposite.
The gauntlet is over and Allen never blinked
The Eagles beat Southlake Carroll 56-35 at Dragon Stadium on Friday. It was tied 14-14 after one quarter and it looked for a while like Carroll might turn it into a track meet it could win. Then Allen put up 21 in the second, took a 35-21 lead into the half, and added 14 more in the third to push it to 49-28. Carroll scored in every quarter and never got closer.
Ty Snell threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. He is a sophomore. So is Zach Williams, who caught three touchdowns against DeSoto two weeks ago. Allen is not surviving its schedule on senior leadership and a veteran line. It is winning with underclassmen against the best rosters in the state, which should worry everybody else in 6A for the next two years.
Now it gets harder in a different way. Allen goes to Prosper on Thursday to open District 6-6A play. Both teams are 3-0. Allen won this game 31-30 last season to take the district. This is the best matchup in Texas this week and nobody outside DFW is talking about it yet.
North Crowley at Duncanville is the game of the year so far
The Panthers beat Summer Creek 41-20 on Friday after the Houston power hung around early. That makes three wins over Aledo, Southlake Carroll and Summer Creek, and DeMarcus Harris is 3-0 in his first three games running the program.
Friday he takes them to Duncanville to open District 11-6A.
These two won three straight 6A Division I titles between them from 2022 through 2024, and they played the 2024 semifinal that North Crowley took 36-34. Duncanville comes in at 1-2. That record is going to fool somebody. It shouldn't. Reginald Samples has a roster that has already played Allen and DeSoto, and a wounded Duncanville team at home in a district opener is not a get-well game for anyone.
DeSoto found its answer by moving a running back to quarterback
After the St. Thomas Aquinas loss and the Allen loss, Claude Mathis made the kind of move coaches only make when they have decided the season is worth saving. He put SaRod Baker, a Texas Tech running back commit, behind center.
Baker accounted for more than 200 total yards and all three DeSoto touchdowns in a 21-20 win over Duncanville at the Cotton Bowl.
DeSoto and Duncanville both sit at 1-2. Those are the same record and not remotely the same season. One team just found something. The other has to open district against North Crowley.
I said last week that the response was the story with DeSoto. This was the response.
North Shore is still the standard
South Oak Cliff jumped out 21-7 at the Cotton Bowl and for a half looked like the team that was going to end North Shore's run at the top. The Mustangs scored on offense and on defense to climb back, took it 23-21, and closed it out with a defensive stand.
Three games, three quality opponents, three wins. The defending 6A Division I champion has not played a comfortable game yet and has not lost one either.
Prosper deserves to be in the conversation
The Eagles beat Austin Westlake 49-40 behind Tyler Albert, who threw for 359 yards and six touchdowns and ran for another. Prosper is 3-0 with wins over North Forney and Westlake.
If Prosper takes down Allen on Thursday, the top of 6A gets rearranged again four weeks into the season.
Results that matter
- Waxahachie 44, Denton Guyer 30. The Indians are 3-0 after trailing at half and committing 13 first-half penalties. Taylen Strange ran for 192 yards and three scores.
- Port Arthur Memorial 29, Lufkin 7. Memorial is 3-0 and last year's semifinal run is looking less and less like an accident.
- Fort Bend Crawford 28, Port Neches-Groves 23. A real 5A result against an established program.
- Odessa Permian 41, Abilene 29. Mojo is 3-0. West Texas belongs in the statewide conversation.
- Shallowater 31, Canadian 28. Going into Canadian and winning is my favorite result of the week that nobody will mention.
- Gilmer 64, Kilgore 50. Fourteen touchdowns, 114 points, two East Texas names that need no explaining.
- Texarkana Pleasant Grove 29, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau 15. The Hawks are 3-0 with Kilgore and Sulphur Springs already behind them.
- Columbus 48, Needville 21. The Cardinals keep looking like a serious small-school team.
- Boerne 30, Davenport 21. Boerne stays unbeaten.
- Aledo 31, Euless Trinity 7. The Bearcats are rolling again, which is what Aledo does.
- Dallas Life Oak Cliff 105, Bonham 14. Reported as the second-highest scoring output in Texas this century.
- Borden County 66, Benjamin 16 and Water Valley 89, Ackerly Sands 47 from the six-man ranks.
Jackson County rivalry that paid off on Homecoming
Edna 42, Industrial 35. Twelve miles apart, tied at 35 with a minute to play, and Edna scored fourteen points in the last twenty-two seconds of game clock to win the Lavaca River Showdown.
We already wrote that one up in full: Lavaca River Showdown Lives up to Hype. Go read it. Industrial fell to 0-3 Friday night and that record tells you nothing true about that football team.
That game is the whole argument for what we do. Nobody outside Jackson County saw it on a scoreboard app and understood a thing about it.
TAPPS and private school watch
Argyle Liberty Christian 45, Sherman 7 is the one that stands out, because Liberty Christian took apart a UIL 6A opponent. Brock 52, Midland Christian 10 dropped Midland Christian to 0-3, and Boerne Geneva shut out Shiner St. Paul 50-0.
Circle these for Week 4
Allen at Prosper, Thursday. District 6-6A opens with two undefeated teams and a rematch of a one-point district title game.
North Crowley at Duncanville, Friday. Three straight state titles between them, a 2024 semifinal classic, and a district opener with a desperate Duncanville team at home.
Waxahachie. The Indians are 3-0 and still the team nobody is picking, which is usually the sign somebody should start.
Where this leaves us
Four teams have separated: Allen, North Crowley, North Shore and Waxahachie. Two of those four play the two most dangerous games on the Week 4 board. By Saturday morning we will know a lot more than we do right now.
And DeSoto is alive, which nobody would have said on Sunday.
