LSG’s 2010 Games Of The Year #16 – 20
-
Updated: July 2, 2011
Each year, Lone Star Gridiron reviews thousands of great games and picks out the best of the best from the previous season. This year, we had over 200 games in the running for those top 25 spots so narrowing it down was tougher than ever. It will long be debated which ones were better than others and which games should have made the list that didn't. What is certain, however, is that this IS Texas high school football, and it doesn't get any better than this!
This is the second installment, counting down the top 25 games of 2010 with #'s 20 through 16.
# 20 Longview 32, Abilene 31
In this one, Longview beat Abilene in overtime 32-31 on a fake extra point conversion. Longview finally won a close game after losing in the final seconds the last two weeks to top ranked teams Allen and Lufkin. Abilene had forced overtime when they marched 70 yards in the final 2 minutes and 10 seconds of the game to score on a 15 yard pass to superstar running back Herschel Sims with 16 seconds remaining. On the extra point conversion, the holder ran the ball right up the middle on a designed fake to get the win. The win for Longview helped them avoid their first four-game losing streak since 1965.
#19 Wimberley 49, Cuero 42
Wimberley opened the 2010 season with a win over Cuero and snapped the Gobblers 33-game home winning streak. After Cuero led 28-21 early at the half, the score was all tied up 35-35 with 8:52 remaining. Wimberley took the kickoff and scored on a long drive with a little over 4 minutes remaining. The Texans then put it out of reach with an interception and another touchdown to take a 49-35 lead. Wimberley took advantage of an uncharacteristic four Cuero turnovers to get the win.
#18 Cuero 34, Port Lavaca Calhoun 21
Cuero and Port Lavaca Calhoun played the type of game that you just do not see anymore. This game featured only 7 passes and one of those was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. The Gobblers were able to get away with a 34-21 victory although the game was closer than the score indicated. Calhoun, with the ball, was down 28-21 with less than a minute remaining but that’s when they threw the interception that was returned for a touchdown. Cueros star running back, Trent Jackson, rushed for 386 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. All of Jacksons touchdown runs were 50 or more yards. (87, 78, 71 & 51)
#17 Austin Lake Travis 37, Kerrville Tivy 33
Austin Lake Travis is not usually known for their defense but they intercepted a pass in the end zone with 2:23 remaining to earn a hard fought victory over Kerrville Tivy. Tivys star quarterback, Johnny Manziel, rushed for 272 yards and four touchdowns and passed for another 195 yards. The Cavaliers had to overcome an early 19-0 deficit to get the win.
#16 Rice Consolidated 28, Vanderbilt Industrial 21 (2 OT )
Rice Consolidated was able to hold off Industrial in double overtime and LSG was there!! It looked like as though Industrial had won the game in regulation when everyone but the officials thought that a last second field goal was good. In overtime, Industrial scored first making it 21-14. Rice then ran into trouble on their possession facing a 4th and long. Their pass fell incomplete but Industrial was called for pass interference. Rice ran 3 more plays before facing yet another 4th down and long. A pass into the end zone was incomplete BUT there was another pass interference penalty against Industrial. Rice was then able to score and tie it up at 21. Rice then scored a touchdown in the second overtime to make the score 28-21. Finally, Industrial came up short on a 4th down scramble in the second overtime to end the game.
