Updated: December 16, 2011
Refugio 36, Cisco 35
The Refugio Bobcats won their first title since 1982 and their 2nd all-time with a wild 36-35 win over the Cisco Loboes. The Loboes fall to 0-4 all-time in champioship games. All 4 of those games have been since 2002.
The Bobcats led this one 14-13 at the half and as both teams combined for 507 total yards. The Cisco defense stepped up big stopping Refugio twice on downs inside their own 10 yard line.
Cisco scored first in the 2nd half and put Refugio behind for the first time all season in the 2nd half. Refugio responded though and scored the next 22 points to take a 36-19 lead with around 10 minutes left. Cisco came right back with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Sophomore running back Mason Reed who also had over 100 yards rushing. The Loboes got the ball back and behind the running of Hayden Lewis they scored again to make it 36-33. On Refugio's next possession, they went 3 and out and then opted to take a safty when they dropped back to punt to make the score 36-35. Cisco then took over at their own 34 with 2:22 remaining. The Bobcats were able to hold on a 4th down and short paly at their own 41 yard line to take the ball over and run out the last 58 seconds.
Refugio defensive back Cory Brown was the defensive player of the game with 10 tackles. He also caught 6 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown on offense. Bobcat quarterback Travis Quintanilla completed 20 passes on only 25 attempts for 372 yards and 3 touchdowns to get the offensive player of the game. Wide receiver Lynx Hawthorne caught 4 passes for 119 yards and scored a touchdown. Kicker Adolfo Cordero connected on 4 extra points. The Bobcats finish the seaosn with 891 points.
For the record, Quintanilla ends his season with 195 completions on 285 attemspts for 3,929 yards and 52 touchdowns. Not bad for being a sophomore. Hawthorne finishes with 72 receptions for 1,777 yards 25 touchdowns. Cordero ends his season with 94 extra points.
This was 2nd championship won by Bobcat head coach Jason Herring. He also won one in 2000 while he was at Sonora.
