Texas High School Football Roundup for the Houston Area

Week 9

Texas high school footballKaty Passes Big Test in Win Over Cinco Ranch: Unbeatens Katy and Katy Cinco Ranch squared off on Saturday in the battle for District 19-5A. The Tigers left no doubt they are still top dogs, cruising past the Cougars 40-7. Texas A&M commit Ryan Anderson returned for the probable champs, amassing 134 total yards and two touchdowns. The real star of the game was corner Sy Slater, who returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown. The Cougars were held to just 82 yards of offense on the day, and were outscored 33-0 after tying the game early in the second quarter. The Tigers will have to put away Houston Memorial next week for the district crown, which we expect them to do en route to a deep playoff run.

Manvel Rides Deriq King to Third-Straight District Title: If you haven’t been paying attention to Manvel quarterback Deriq King, it’s time to join the party. The Mavericks quarterback could do no wrong in the 42-7 dismantling of rival Pearland, accounting for five touchdowns in the rout. King did it with his arm and his legs, rushing for 145 yards and throwing for 376 in his MVP performance, throwing three of his four touchdowns in the second half. All of this against a team that had given up just 27 points all season. Jamond Manuel also had a big game for the Mavericks, catching five passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Behind King and a defense that has given up just 86 points on the year, Manvel will be a team to watch in the playoffs.

Tristian Houston Guides North Shore to District Title: With a stifling defense led by Zack Whitley, there was hardly a doubt that Galena Park North Shore would win District 21-5A. But if Tristian Houston can continue to play like this, the ceiling for this team is as high as any team in the area. Given a season-high 19 carries, the talented tailback racked up 204 yards and three touchdowns. While he crossed the 200-yard mark for the second time this season, the Mustang defense held La Porte to 66 total yards in the 38-0 victory. Like clockwork, David Aymond’s squad is in the playoffs and ready to make some noise.

Lamar Tops Rival to Capture 20-5A Crown: Houston Bellaire fought until the end, but Houston Lamar just had too much Darrell Colbert for the Cardinals. The Redskin quarterback threw for 192 yards and two scores, adding 123 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Lamar started off the scoring and went up 21-7 before the Cardinals mounted a furious third-quarter comeback to tie the game. Ronnie Wesley, who had 134 rushing yards, ran for a touchdown with 4:35 left to ultimately decide the game, and the District 20-5A, for his team.

Stratford Sets Up Epic Showdown with Ridge Point: Houston Stratford had a dangerous matchup with 4-4 Tomball on Friday. The Spartans easily came out on top with a 49-8 win, setting up a showdown for the District 22-4A with Fort Bend Ridge Point in Week 10. The Panthers, which are coming off a 70-7 thrashing of Houston Spring Woods, have led the district all season. But Stratford has been surging of late, allowing just 14 points through district play. If you love high school football, which we know you do, try to make it out for this one.
